Most often, the value of your teeth isn’t realized until they are lost. The loss of a single tooth or more can have a negative impact on your oral health and confidence. That’s why teeth replacement is vital for proper functionality and aesthetic enhancement for everyone.
A missing tooth or teeth can also affect your speech, the ability to chew your food, and the integrity of your jawbone. Moreover, it can cause the slow shifting of your teeth into some of the empty spaces.
Some of the causes of tooth loss include:
- Gum disease
- Injury
- Severe tooth decay
- Genetic condition
Regardless of how your tooth is lost, we are concerned with restoring your missing tooth for better oral health and good quality of life. There are two main types of teeth replacement – removable and fixed replacement. Read on to find out more.
Removable teeth replacement – dentures
More commonly known as false teeth, dentures are fitted in place of natural teeth. We have partial and complete dentures.
A complete set is used to replace all your teeth on either jaw arch. A partial set on the other hand is used to replace 1 or more missing teeth.
Dentures are custom-made at any of our clinics using impressions (mouldings) from your gums.
As the name suggests, dentures are removable, and you can clean them by soaking them in a cleaning solution – often overnight.
Just like the other teeth replacement options; dentures are important if you lose your natural teeth, as losing your teeth makes it difficult to chew your food, and speak well. When your eating lifestyle is affected your diet may adversely be affected too. Again, to support your facial muscles and prevent them from sagging, we recommend dentures as a replacement option.
Fixed teeth replacement options
The fixed teeth replacement options are superior to the removable one. Unlike dentures that can be removed – these are fixed in your mouth. We have two types of fixed replacement:
- Dental bridges (and crowns)
- Dental implants
Dental bridges
A dental bridge consists of a false tooth or teeth being held in place by dental crowns that have been cemented onto each of the abutment teeth. They can be considered when you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap created by your missing tooth. A bridge can consist of one or more pontics (fake teeth) which are held in place by dental crowns.
Note that you need to have natural teeth on both sides of the gap created by your missing tooth for support. Bridges are strong enough to replace molars as well.
Dental implants
Dental implants are a fixed and the most superior form of teeth replacement available. Implants are artificial tooth roots used to support the restoration of a missing tooth or teeth, helping to stop or prevent jaw bone loss. You can use implants to replace just a single tooth or several teeth.
By replacing missing tooth roots, dental implants provide people with the strength and stability required to eat all the foods they love, without struggling to chew. Additionally, they help to stimulate and maintain jaw bone, preventing bone loss and helping to support facial features.
